Beware of Tax Scams!

The IRS is warning taxpayers to be wary of tax scams aimed at obtaining your personal information in the midst of tax season. Scam artists across the country pretending to be IRS agents are now calling under the pretext of verifying your tax information over the phone.  They claim that they have received your tax return and just need to verify some details such as your social security number, bank account and credit card numbers in order to process your return.  If you fail to comply, they will immediately threaten you with police or other law-enforcement action such as arrest or deportation as well as suspension of your license.

Remember that the IRS will never:

  • Call to demand immediate payment over the phone, nor will an agent call about taxes owed without first having mailed you several bills.
  • Call or email you to verify your identity by asking for personal and financial information.
  • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
  • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone or by email.
  • Threaten to immediately involve local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested or deported for not paying.

You may report a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from the IRS at 800-366-4484 or use the web page: “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting.”  You can also report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission using the FTC Complaint Assistant at FTC.gov.
