IRS Upgrades “Where’s My Refund Tool”

Likely the most frequently used IRS webpage is getting an upgrade!  The online tool will be getting an upgrade, allowing taxpayers to not only see the status of their current year refund, but also the status of their returns from the 2 prior seasons.  The update of this tax tool stems from the pressure being put on the IRS to process backlogged returns.

More Detail

While the update will allow you to see more information from the past, other major changes were not made.  The process to access your refund status is still the same, starting with going to the IRS “Where’s My Refund” page, then inputting information including:

  • Your Social Security number or ITIN
  • Your filing status
  • Your exact refund amount

Some taxpayers have had issues with viewing their refunds in the past, however, please note that it takes some time for the IRS to receive a return and update their tracker.  The webpage will allow taxpayers to view the status of their refund 24 hours after filing a current year (2021) tax return, 4 days after e-filing a 2019 or 2020 return, or up to four weeks after mailing a return in.

When to Call the IRS

According to the IRS, if you continue to have trouble viewing your return status using the “Where’s My Refund” tool, there are a few scenarios where a call may be necessary, as follows:

  1. It’s been 21 days or more since you e-filed
  2. It’s been more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return
  3. Where’s My Refund says we can provide more information to you over the phone

Other than the above-listed reasons, it is likely not in your best interest to call the IRS to track your refund as it will likely only lead to a lot of time spent on the phone, and an uncertain answer coming from an agent.

Wrap Up

Even with some progress being made, the IRS continues to be criticized for its handling of the enormous backlog that has built up.  We are likely to see more changes made to the tools the IRS leverages to efficiently get tax returns out coming in the future.  If you are having serious issues regarding your refund, speaking with your accountant may be in your best interest to find out if there are the next best steps to take!
