Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie, After All, She Has Pay Slips to Prove It

Earlier this summer, global superstar and singer, Shakira was accused of tax fraud by the Spanish government. The claim against her was that she had millions of dollars in unpaid taxes from the time of 2012-2014 when she was allegedly living in Spain with her family during that time. According to prosecutors, if convicted she could face up to 8 years in prison as well as millions of dollars in fines. However, the singer won’t go down that easy, as she recently spoke out on these allegations claiming her innocence.

Shakira’s Response

Shakira is adamant there is enough evidence on her part, and lack thereof from the Spanish Government that she is completely innocent of these accusations and doesn’t owe them anything. “Because I have to fight for what I believe; because these are false accusations,” says Shakira, “First of all, I didn’t spend 183 days per year [in Spain] at that time at all. I was busy fulfilling my professional commitments around the world. Second, I’ve paid everything they claimed I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So as of today, I owe zero to them.”

According to the Associated Press, prosecutors in Barcelona claimed she needs to pay taxes in the country because she spent more than half of each year from 2012 to 2014 in Spain. Shakira claims that to be impossible because during those years she was on a world tour and “spent more than 240 days outside of Spain, so there was no way I qualified as a resident.”

Attack On Her Reputation?

With no evidence to support these “fictional claims”, the singer believes that the tax authorities have resorted to salacious press campaigns to try and sway the media to put her in a negative light, with the threat of reputational damage to coerce settlement agreements. While in the middle of her battle with prosecutors, the global superstar was quick to point out that other Spanish stars also face the same issues, “It is well known that the Spanish tax authorities do this often not only with celebrities like me (or [Cristiano] Ronaldo, Neymar, [Xabi] Alonso, and many more), it also happens unjustly to the regular taxpayer. It’s just their style. But I’m confident that I have enough proof to support my case and that justice will prevail in my favor.”

Wrap Up

No trial date has been set between Shakira and the Spanish government, however, the singer seems extremely confident that she has enough evidence to prove her innocence.  We will continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds.
