Re-Imagining Accounting Practices Post-COVID-19

    • Working towards a paperless workplace
    • Establishing at-home and in-office roles
    • Communicating constantly and efficiently
    • Fostering a renewed sense of company culture

Ask any accountant and they’ll all tell you the same thing: 2020 has been the most unprecedented, interesting, and unexpected year in accounting. From floating deadlines to remote working, Coronavirus dealt us a difficult hand, one that encouraged us to re-imagine our firm and gave us the opportunity to improve our practices to meet the expectations of a post-COVID-19 workplace.

The main questions to ask as we work past the pandemic are:

What do we want our new normal to look like? What practices pre-COVID do we want to retain and which should we leave in the past?

Going Paperless = Less Mess
For DSJ, the switch to virtual working during quarantine was one we embraced and have continued utilizing. With our staff working from home, we digitalized our work and realized that physical files and messy paperwork are certainly things to leave in the past.

Thriving In A Virtual Workplace
Our company thrived off virtual meetings and video calls; it’s a practice we plan to keep. While we are back in the office, we’ve learned that we have the capability to work from home with minimal staff in the office.

Communicating Throughout
Communication was and remains the biggest asset we have as we process returns. Although we spent a good portion of this tax season apart, we kept a constant line of communication open between all staff in the office and at home. We encouraged our clients to do the same, keeping in touch despite the need to stay apart.

Strengthening Company Culture
If there ever was such a thing as a perfect time to boost and build office morale, now would be it. We have taken this past tax season—perhaps the longest one we’ve had—to improve how we work with one another and find ways for our company to show support for our staff.
