The Price is Right: Thanksgiving Edition

  • Thanksgiving this year presents consumers with low prices & affordable options
  • From driving to flying, many are still traveling for the holiday as COVID-19 cases soar

With the ever-increasing COVID-19 infection rates, gathering with family and friends this Thanksgiving may come at a high cost for health. But with some of the lowest prices, highest travel rates, and most meal planning options available, the fiscal cost for Thanksgiving 2020 is looking low and affordable.

  1. The average cost for a traditional meal is $48.91, the lowest it’s been since 2010
A traditional Thanksgiving meal—complete with turkey, veggies, stuffing, sides, and pumpkin pie—is currently tagged at $48.91, the lowest price this decade. With 95% of Americans looking forward to turkey, a predicted 40 million lbs. of the bird will be sold this year, averaging at $1.30/lb. Ironically, this cost-per-pound is 5 cents more than the average cost for a whole. Thanksgiving dinner in 1920.
  2. There are 4 major options for at-home food delivery. Which offers the best deal?
Online food delivery services are offering affordable options right to your front door. Walmart ranks as the cheapest option ($30.21) and Fresh Direct at the steepest ($89.24), though Amazon Pantry remains the most popular source for at-home food delivery.
  3. Spend a bit more, but save your time with curbside pick-up pre-made meals.
Some of the best comfort food options—Bob Evans, Cracker Barrel, Boston Market—as well as grocery stores like Whole Foods are offering complete meals with curbside pick-up. The average price for a six-person meal comes in at $62.19.
  4. Air travel numbers are down from 2019, but high for a COVID-19 affected 2020
According to TSA traveler throughput checkpoints, last Friday already saw the number for air travelers surpass 1 million—only the second time that’s happened since March. Though air travel is predicted to see major decreases from 2019, a high total of 2.4 million people are expected to fly throughout the thanksgiving holiday week.
  5. Even if you’re staying home, take advantage of low gas prices now
Though they vary, gas prices, on the whole, are steadily dropping this holiday, bringing the national average gas price down to $2.10 per gallon (compared to last year’s $2.56 average). It’s hopeful news since driving is predicted to take up 95% of all travel this holiday season.
